“Consumers are focusing more on planning their trips to the grocery store to save money,” said Nelson, “Being able to go to the web to find the best grocery deals at their stores, print coupons, load digital coupons on their store cards, and even use their cell phone to get cash back on purchases helps save money without taking a lot of time.”

To streamline the savings process, Nelson recommends shoppers take advantage of the free tools available:

  • Download the apps for your stores to get digital coupons, store coupons, and special discounts.  Target’s Cartwheel app is invaluable, grocery stores apps enable shoppers to select digital coupons even while shopping, and drugstore apps have special store coupons.  Using apps also cuts down on having to carry around multiple store loyalty cards, since they are built into the app.

  • Print manufacturers coupons from home before shopping.  CouponMom.has over 800 free printable coupons every month for popular brands of food, household and personal products. Printing a $2 coupon for an item you already buy is like printing cash.

  • Use cash back apps to get high-value cash offers after purchasing products, which can be used on top of coupons.  Offers include groceries, household items, personal care products, beer, wine, liquor and even retail stores.  Apps with the most offers include Ibotta, Checkout 51, Savingstar and Mobisave.

  • Use a grocery deals website like CouponMom.com to do shopping research for you.  You’ll find a list of best deals by store, which matches sale prices with store promotions and all coupons and cash back offers available.  By combining offers, you’ll be able to save 50 to 100% on many items easily and using a website to do the research will save time. Save Money on Super Bowl Parties

How to Save on Super Bowl Entertaining
by Stephanie Nelson

January 26, 2017

Whether you are having a small get-together or hosting a big gang for the Super Bowl, you can enjoy the event as a generous host without breaking the bank with Coupon Mom’s tips:

  1. Save on Food:

First, if any of your guests offer to bring something, say YES!  You can make an inexpensive main dish item like chili in a crockpot, barbecue pork or chicken in the crockpot to shred for sandwiches or a big Mexican casserole.  Let people bring side dishes, salads, appetizers and/or desserts.

Shop smart: All the grocery stores will feature popular game day items to get shoppers in their stores.  Stock up on sale-priced or store brand snacks (chips, crackers, cookies). Use coupons—just print grocery coupons available online and find coupons in the Sunday newspaper circulars.  You can combine Ibotta and Checkout 51 cash back offers for food items with coupons to save even more.  CouponMom.com lists all the best deals for thousands of national and grocery stores across the country, combining sales, coupons, promotions and cash back offers to point shoppers to the best savings in their area.  This week, get deals like Free Nabisco Crackers and Cookies, $1 Coke 12 packs, Free Chips Ahoy cookies, Free Superpretzels as a few examples.  Go to your store deals list on CouponMom.com to find the best grocery deals at your store.

DIY—Do it Yourself:  Skip the high cost of party trays and do simple trays yourself to save 50-75% (with dollar store platters).  Quick and simple finger foods are great for a Super Bowl party and they don’t take long to make.  Make big sub sandwiches with deli meats and cheese and cut them up into small pieces on trays, cut your own $5 of raw vegetables and serve with ranch salad dressing as a dip, make pinwheel sandwich roll ups with big tortillas and deli meats arranged on a tray, serve homemade chili in disposable bowls.  Go online and find more simple food ideas to feed a crowd easily on a budget, like our Creamy Chicken Enchilada Roll Ups , Pepperoni Pizza Pockets and our Southwest Turkey Chili.  Everyone loves this $1 Hot Chocolate Brownie dessert that takes 5 minutes to make and it will feed a crowd for $1.

  1. Save on alcohol: Decide if you’re making your event BYOB or if you’re providing the beverages.  Many people may prefer BYOB because they can bring exactly what they prefer.   If you’re serving alcohol, this can be the most expensive part of the event.  If you’re providing the beverages, keep it simple by selecting just two or three options (such as beer and wine or one signature cocktail). Depending on the size of the group, getting a keg of beer may be the least expensive option.

You can also save by shopping the sales at your local grocery store or discount store which are all featuring name brand beers at sale prices.  On top of sales, be strategic by using cash back apps like Ibotta or Checkout 51 to get offers for beers, wines and liquors.  For example, Checkout 51 has an offer for $3 on two 24 or 30-packs of Budweiser or Miller Lite cans.   Ibotta has dozens of offers on alcohol including major brands of beer, wine and liquor ranging from $1 to $10.  When you redeem your first Ibotta rebate, you’ll get a $10 bonus.  All you do is download the free app and scan your receipt after purchase to get the cash back.  No mailing of forms and waiting six weeks for a rebate.  You’ll get the cash within a day or two.

To save on the cost of whatever alcohol you decide to buy, you may pay lower prices at membership clubs like Sam’s or Costco.  You do not have to be a member to buy alcohol (due to legal restrictions) and prices can be 10 to 25% less than sale prices at grocery stores.  You can check the prices at your local Sam’s Club on their website to compare to other alternatives before making a special trip.

  1. Save on décor: Festive decorations can make a party, but you don’t need to go to an expensive party store.  Just go to your dollar store and buy paper goods in team colors.  You can get plates, napkins, plastic silverware, disposable serving dishes, tablecloths and even balloons at a fraction of the cost of other types of stores.

How to Live Well on $20,000/Year

Saving money is just as effective as making more money, so perhaps reading this blog post will help you keep more of your hard-earned cash!  I came across a post on Reddit today, written by a person who has  managed to raise her family comfortably on an income of $20,000 per year with no assistance.  The general theme is that it doesn’t matter how much you make, it matters how well you spend it.  If you plan and are creative, you can live better on a $20,000 income than some people do on two or three times that amount.  I thought the post was very well-organized and easy to read, and full of good tips.  Of course, one of the tips was to use CouponMom.com which is how I found the post, and we couldn’t agree more!  In addition to how to save on groceries, our family has used many of her other tips on how to save on clothes, restaurants, entertainment and more.  I noticed that her lifestyle also included avoiding big debt (including avoiding a mortgage), so there were no crippling loan payments or interest costs.   Some of the lifestyle choices may be too rigid for some of us, but you can pick and choose the ideas that work for you.  It’s a quick read full of easy advice that is worth sharing.  This may not be new information, but if there is even one new tip or strategy that helps you, then you could save hundreds or even thousands of dollars over your lifetime, which makes a difference at any income level.

Five Ways to Save on Halloween

Halloween can be an expensive holiday, with projected average spending of $82 per shopper, up 12% from last year. A little creativity and Strategic Shopping using Coupon Mom’s savings tips will help keep the fun in Halloween without breaking the bank.

According to the National Retail Federation, Americans are expected to spend an average $82.93 per shopper as compared to $74.34 last year, a 12% increase. In total, Americans will spend $8.4 billion dollars with the majority of the spending going to costumes, candy and greeting cards. However, using proven savings tips from Stephanie Nelson, the Coupon Mom, parents can make sure everyone has a fun Halloween at a fraction of the average spending. Use her Five Ways to Save this Halloween to avoid scary bills later!

1. Costumes: Instead of buying full-priced costumes at a party store, shoppers can challenge their creativity and get simple costume ideas from Google, Facebook or Pinterest. Thrift stores are a great source of costume ideas. Parents can make it fun for the kids to come up with inexpensive costume ideas by rewarding them with a few dollars if they come up with free or inexpensive costume alternatives, saving the cost of the $35 party store costume. Parents will be teaching a valuable lesson at the same time as saving money.

2. Candy: Take advantage of national stores’ sales on Halloween candy, and stack their sales with store and newspaper coupons. Many of the major drugstore chains like CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid will also have automatic rebates on Halloween candy, making it possible to save 70% or more on name brand candy that trick-or-treaters love. Find the best candy deals from the store deals lists at http://www.CouponMom.com.

3. Halloween Greeting Cards: Save the $3 to $5 per card by making a homemade version or shop the two for $1 card section at the dollar store or discount stores like Walmart.

4. Pumpkins: Shoppers should buy pumpkins on Halloween Day when the pumpkin sellers are willing to drop their prices to clear out their inventory.

5. Halloween Decor and candy bags: Head to the dollar store and get great Halloween decorations at a fraction of the cost of the big party store. Save the expense of Halloween candy bags or buckets and use a pillowcase which is more durable and less likely to tear.
