I just came across this recent news headline:
Couponing mom attacked inside grocery store for holding up the line
(Please note, that isn’t me.) In my 15 years of running the Coupon Mom website, this is the FIRST I’ve ever heard of a shopper attacking a couponer because they were using too many grocery coupons. The Memphis mom was interviewed by the local news station and said she went to Kroger late at night to use coupons before they expired. After exchanging hostile words with the shopper behind her, she said she was attacked and actually pushed to the ground and blacked out. However, the store surveillance video showed a slightly different story, so the news station updated their story. It looks like the man was more irritated that she threw her drink on him because he was criticizing her for using too many coupons.
It does reinforce my philosophy which is to turn to the person in line behind you and say nicely, “I may not be the best person to stand behind today” and then they can decide whether they’d like to pick a shorter line or if they’d like to stay to learn how to save big money! And it’s probably a good idea not to throw your drink on the shopper in line behind you. Most of the time I’ve found shoppers appreciate seeing the magic of extreme couponing at the register. And if the shopper behind me only has a couple of items, I’ll ask if they’d like to go ahead of me because I have a big order with a lot of coupons. It only takes a couple of minutes and would certainly have prevented this terrible situation from happening!
Have you ever been attacked by a shopper in the checkout line? I certainly hope not!
